OIC on Jammu and Kashmir
The OIC has been, consistently and unequivocally, supporting the Kashmir Cause through a series of pronouncements, including the Communiqués issued by the Islamic Summits and the Resolutions adopted by various sessions of the Council of Foreign Minister.
The OIC resolutions and pronouncements reinforce the calls for settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolutions.
In the wake of ongoing crisis in IIOJK, caused by India’s illegal and unilateral actions of 5 August 2019, the OIC remains actively seized of the matter. The 47th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM), held in Niamey on 27-28 November 2020, adopted a forceful and comprehensive resolution, condemning and rejecting the Indian actions and calling for resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UNSC Resolutions.
The General Secretariat of the Organization has also issued multiple statements, showing concern over different developments in IIOJK, and rejecting the Indian efforts for demographic change.
President Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan was invited to address the 47th CFM Session as the leader of the delegation of True Representative of Kashmiri People. Earlier, in November 2019, he was received by the OIC Secretary General, and invited as a keynote speaker at a dedicated meeting to discuss the situation in IIOJ&K during the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission’s 16th Regular Session.
OIC Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Yousef Al-Dobeay, visited Pakistan and Azad Kashmir on 2-6 March 2020 to obtain first-hand information about the situation, and express solidarity with the Kashmiri people. A comprehensive report on his visit was circulated at the 47th CFM Session in Niamey.
The OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir, comprising Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Niger and Pakistan, has met thrice during last 18 months and issued strong statements in support of the Kashmir Cause. Significantly, in its latest virtual meeting held on 22 June 2020 at the Ministerial level, the Contact Group called on the OIC Member States to raise the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in their bilateral engagements with India.
